Israel-based aerospace company Urban Aeronautics has teamed up with Universal Avionics to bring enhanced landing, navigation, and night vision capabilities to its CityHawk compact VTOL aircraft.
Through the partnership, the aircraft developer will be using Universal Avionics’ enhanced flight vision system and advanced video management device on the CityHawk air taxi and aerial emergency medical services vehicles.
“This partnership is particularly exciting in that it offers the CityHawk and our pilots improved visibility and agility for every ride, whether it be transferring passengers from an office building downtown to an apartment building downtown or evacuating a patient to a hospital,” said Nimrod Golan-Yanay, CEO of Urban Aeronautics, in a press release.
Universal Avionics will provide pilots with a wearable headset, sensor package, sensor fusion, and augmented reality platform, which it claims will help improve weather and traffic handling, heighten pilot night vision, and enhance landing and ground movement.
Designed to provide air taxi and ambulance services in compact urban spaces, the CityHawk is a wingless aircraft with a fully-enclosed rotor system. Urban Aeronautics began developing the CityHawk in 2006, and flew its first prototype in 2015. Since then, the company claims to have logged more than 300 test flights.

This partnership comes as Urban Aeronautics prepares to close its Series A funding round, and in the wake of recent partnerships with other leading names in eVTOL and aerospace technology. This includes Urban Aeronautics’ research partnership with London-based Skyports to explore requirements for eVTOL infrastructure in the Middle East, as well as another partnership with California-based HyPoint to adapt hydrogen fuel cell technology for aviation.
